I was thrilled to see the North Shore News feature the new 22-part documentary series for North Shore Rescue this week.

I had the honour of editing this entire project. It meant spending months weaving together hours of new interviews, hundreds of photos, and decades of VHS footage.

My goal wasn’t just to make a timeline. It was to take boxes of scattered stories and turn them into something that captures the “ground-pounding” grit that built the team.

In the article, long-time NSR member Allan McMordie notes the urgency to “get some of these stories recorded before we lose some of these people.”

That is exactly why Scrapbook Films exists. Whether it’s a rescue team or a family business, history is perishable. If your story is currently sitting in a box in the basement, it is time to preserve it.

For small businesses, creatives, and therapists.

In a world of slick marketing and corporate jargon, what makes a business truly connect? It’s not the mission statement. It’s the story. More specifically, it’s the founder’s story.

Why did you start this business?

What personal experience or passion drove you to create it?

This “why” is the heartbeat of your brand. It’s what makes you relatable, authentic, and trustworthy. It transforms you from a faceless company into a real person on a mission.

People don’t just care what you do; they care why you do it.

The Power of the Why

Your founder’s story is the ultimate explanation of your “why.” It’s the narrative that gives context and meaning to your work. For a therapist, it might be a personal journey with mental health. For a creative, a lifelong love for their craft. For a business owner, the drive to create a better solution to a problem they faced.

This story is your most powerful differentiator. Large corporations can’t replicate your personal journey. Your story is uniquely yours.

Building Trust Through Story

When a potential client is choosing who to work with—especially in a personal field like therapy or coaching—they are looking for more than expertise. They’re looking for connection. They want to know that the person they are trusting is someone who gets it.

A founder’s story offers that. It shows your humanity. It lets people hear your voice, feel your values, and see the kind of presence you bring. It helps the right people find you, not just because of what you do, but because of who you are.

A Story That Works Quietly

A good founder story isn’t loud or polished; it’s a quiet, honest reflection. Sharing it isn’t about ego—it’s about clarity. It’s about letting the right people recognize something true in you and building a business with heart, from the inside out.
