The Shared Story

One film for your business. One film gifted to the community.

I have always believed that when you tell the story of a local business, you are also telling the story of the community it serves. You need a Founder Film to share the heart of what you do. But right down the street, there are local nonprofits and heritage groups doing vital work, and their stories are at risk of being lost simply because they lack the budget to capture them. I created this setup as a way to look after both.

How the Co-Funding Works

The Shared Story Partnership

$5,000 CAD

The Math: Normally, a standalone Founder Film is $3,500 and my reduced rate for a nonprofit film is $2,700. By sharing our production days, you invest $5,000, and I donate my profit margin and editing time to bridge the gap. Together, we get both stories on screen.

What We Are Creating:

Your Founder Film: A 3 to 5 minute documentary style portrait about your business and why you built it.
The Community Film: A second 3 to 5 minute film, created for and gifted to a local charity on your behalf.
Social Shorts: One 30-second vertical cut for each of you, formatted for Instagram or LinkedIn.
Shared Production: We spread the filming out over relaxed, half-day sessions so it never feels rushed.
The Edit: I bring over 25 years of editing experience to both films, ensuring they feel quiet, authentic, and completely unscripted.

How Your Support is Shared

Instead of slapping a logo on a gala banner, your support is woven right into the film. We include a quiet, elegant credit at the close of the nonprofit’s story. It is not an ad. It is just a lasting acknowledgement of your help.

Your film is built on the power of a personal story. Whether you’re preserving a family legacy, a community history, or a founder’s journey, our **StoryLayers** process is how we weave your physical and digital memories into that story, turning it into a true cinematic heirloom. This can feel like the most overwhelming part of the process, but we’ve designed our workflow to be the *opposite*. We are a “story-first” team, which means we make it collaborative, simple, and respectful of your time.

Our Simple, “Story-First” Process

We never ask you to “just send us all your photos.” That’s not a creative process; it’s a chore. Our StoryLayers method ensures we gather only the most meaningful images that actually serve your film.

Step 1: We Find the Story

It all starts with the interview. We sit down for the guided conversation *first* to discover the most powerful, cinematic moments and memories. We listen for the stories that need visual “layers.”

Step 2: The StoryLayers Treasure Hunt

*After* the interview, we send you a personalized “treasure hunt” guide. Instead of a vague request, it might say: “We heard a great story about [the family dog, ‘Skipper’]—do you have any photos of him?” This makes it easy for you to find the *perfect* photos without the stress of searching through everything.

Step 3: We Make Sharing Easy

Once the “treasure” is found, we show you how to get those photos to us. Whether you have digital files on your phone or physical prints in a box, we have a way to make it simple, with no tech skills needed.

Step 4: We Weave Them In

Our editors integrate your photos into the film with the same master craft we bring to every frame. You’ll see the final result—the voices and the visuals working together—when we deliver your completed story.

Have physical photo prints? The Google PhotoScan app (it’s 100% free) is an amazing tool that uses your phone’s camera to create high-quality, glare-free digital scans in seconds.

3. The “Simple Snapshot” (Fastest)

No app? No problem. Just lay your photo flat in bright, natural window light. Hold your phone directly above it and take a clear picture. Our editors are experts at working with photos of all kinds.

A Note on Your Original Photos

Your photos are precious. For local Vancouver clients, we rarely need to take possession of your physical albums. **In fact, we’re happy to visit you and help sort through your albums together if that feels easier.**

For remote clients, we guide you through digital sharing so your originals never have to leave your home. Your memories stay safe while we build your legacy.

A powerful five to seven minute interview based film honouring an elder’s life, culture, or contribution. Captured with warmth and care, this piece blends a thoughtful on camera interview with light environmental footage filmed in their own space to create a dignified and cinematic record of their legacy.

The process begins with a pre interview story consultation with your organization and the subject. This is followed by a relaxed four hour cinematic interview session on location. The final piece is a five to seven minute cultural documentary that receives professional editing, color grading, sound design, licensed music, and one round of revisions. Everything is delivered in an archival quality digital format that is ideal for museum exhibits or online archives.

On the craft

Documenting community history requires a different kind of listening. It is about creating a space where someone feels safe enough to share the weight of their experience. In the edit, the craft lies in preserving their memory and cultural impact. I work with you to keep your community’s perspective true and clear. I am letting their voice carry the history exactly the way they lived it and letting us feel the weight of their story as it impacts your community.

Nobody has ever properly asked you about that. Not the full story. Not what it actually cost, what it gave back, and why you are still here doing it.

The Founder Film is a short documentary built around a single conversation with you, in your own space. We generally aim for 3 to 5 minutes, but I always let the story dictate the final cut. If a crucial part of your journey needs a little more room to breathe, we give it the space it deserves. No script. No performance. No pitch. It builds the one thing you cannot manufacture: genuine trust with the people who matter to your business. Clients, collaborators, and future partners will understand who you are before you have said a word to them.

We also offer a fully remote Founder Film experience starting at $2,495 CAD for clients outside of Vancouver.

We start with a conversation, not a contract.

How it works: We meet first over a call or Zoom. I ask questions and listen. By the time we schedule the half day shoot in your space, I already know what matters to you. The shoot itself feels much more like a long conversation with someone paying real attention than a production day. From there I edit, score, and shape the film into something that holds up twenty years from now. If we are working together remotely, the care and the editing remain exactly the same. We simply replace the on location shoot with a dedicated remote recording session.

What you receive: You get a finished film for your website, a version cut for social media, and a format ready for LinkedIn. We can also weave in old photos, early footage, handwritten notes, or sketches from the beginning. Those tend to be the moments that stop people cold.

On the craft

A short film is actually much harder to edit than a long one. I spend days sitting with our conversation to find the exact moments where you were being the most honest. It takes a lot of careful restraint to take a lifetime of work and whittle it down so that what remains feels completely true to who you are, without ever feeling rushed.

The Company Story: Starting at $5,995 CAD

An 8 to 15 minute documentary built around one or two core interviews. This is the essential origin story: how it started, what it stands for, and what must be carried forward. I weave in your photographs, documents, or early materials to give the story its texture and proof.

The Company Legacy: Starting at $12,500 CAD

A 15 to 25 minute full documentary drawing from multiple interviews with founders, team members, and clients. This is the complete record: the culture, the turning points, and the meaning that accumulated over decades. This includes a much deeper integration of archival footage, photographs, and documents across the full film.

Fully remote capture is also available for both Legacy packages to accommodate distributed teams or out of town founders.

Both packages include multi session discovery and deep dive historical research, multi day on location filming or dedicated remote recording sessions, careful editing, color grading, and sound design. Archival quality digital delivery secures your history. You can also add a custom engraved USB in a premium presentation box for safekeeping, or a private password protected screening page for sharing with family, board members, or stakeholders.

Weaving multiple voices into one cohesive story takes a lot of time and patience in the editing room. I am looking for the common threads between what the founder remembers and what the team experiences today. It involves carefully sorting through decades of old photos and memories, finding the right rhythm, and ensuring the final film feels like a natural conversation rather than a corporate timeline.

For a total of $5,000, I will produce your Founder Film and simultaneously create a professional documentary for a Vancouver nonprofit that otherwise could not afford one. We make this work by filming both stories on the same day. I contribute my time to close the financial gap. You get your story told. A community organization gets a tool they could not afford on their own. It costs $1,500 more than a standard Founder Film and leaves something behind in two directions at once.

Editing two completely different films from the same shoot day requires a careful shift in gears. I have to step out of your business mindset and completely tune into the community story, making sure both films get the exact same level of patience and attention in the editing suite. It is a heavier lift on my end, but it makes the economics work so a good cause gets the documentary they actually deserve.
